I am installing MovableType(MT) 3.0 for Strawroot on her weblog – http://scream.frens.net.
Her current MT blog is “borrowing” MT application which installed on Frens.net. Meaning, her hosting account does not has MT installed.
There is security problem and since MT3.0 has many improved features, we decided to upgrade her blog to MT3.0. The official installation documentation is VERY long and somehow quite confusing. Here I write a simplier MT installation process for my own reference and anyone who dislike reading. ;)
Let’s begin the installation!
Note: replace all CAPITAL values with your own setting.
Assume:
- You have basic knowledge of FTP client and know set file permission.
- MT will use MySQL as database.
- MT will installed into http://www.YOUR_DOMAIN.com/MT/
- Your blog is http://www.YOUR_DOMAIN.com/
- It is your own blog and only one author – you.
Preparation:
- BACKUP! Backup your current MT posts. Use MT’s export feature.
- Download and upzip MT 3.0 installation pack
- Create a new database for MT blog.
- Create a directory named “mt”
- Create a directory named “archives” and set permission to 777
- Create a directory named “import” and upload the backup file(see first point) into it.
Ready? We are going to start MT installation now.
Know what I did? ^^ I just downloaded the .tar.gz, ssh into my server, uncompressed the files and configure mt.cfg and it’s done! ^^v
noorhidayat: you know what, your MT blog’s comment does NOT work!
Having shell access make the installation much faster(don’t need upload) but u still have to do the MT settings wut~ :P
thank u :) u helped me a great deal. MT 3.0 seems to be much better than older version. hopefully no more database problem again..
Hmm…do you think you could help me with installing MT 3.0? Plzzzz…?

sure :)
Installation seems successful, but I can’t view my entries! Where on earth did i go wrong?
whoopee~! no worries, managed to solve it by changing the MTentries = n…
Good.
I’m having probs again… Can’t view my new entries, eventhough i’ve amended my new lastn=”n”, coz it doesn’t recognise non numeric values, wonder why it worked yesterday… You can’t view the new entries at the root site (www.cozylounge.net), but at the ‘index.html’ (www.cozylounge.net/index.html). Logically speaking, isn’t it supposed to be the same???
I went to your site, both http://www.cozylounge.net and http://www.cozylounge.net/index.html are same.
Hi dude, just wanted to add something. A friend of mine was installing MT 3.11, and since I was too busy to help, I directed him to your site. He did everything you wrote, but still had some problems. I was only recently able to look at his files, and discovered that he had uploaded everything into his server as binary files (it was the default setting for his FTP client). I’ve now fixed his problems by simply FTPing all the files (except for images folder) as ASCII. Apparently, it’s a common problem when people are installing MT (from seeing the MT support forums).
I just thought you might want to add a line to your directions about this. Cheers!
i downloaded mt 3.34
mt.cfg and mt-db-pass.cgi are not in the folder..
i assumed those were combined into mt-config.cgi?
after installed and run the mt-check.cgi.. no errors..
but mt-load.cgi is not in the folder.. how do i initialise my mt?
thanks!
